The Charlottesville Jazz Society and WTJU are thrilled to announce the return of saxophonist Jane Bunnett and her all-female band from Cuba, Maqueque. This will be the band’s 5th time in Charlottesville, and they are one of the most requested groups that the CJS has sponsored here. The concert will be held Wednesday September 20th at 7:30 pm at Unity of Charlottesville, 2825 Hydraulic Road.
One of Canada’s most popular jazz artists, Bunnett plays soprano sax and flute, and is the composer of much of the music the group plays. She has received three Grammy nominations for her decades of work with this band and other ensembles. While they are in the area, the band will conduct assemblies at area public schools.
Maqueque will be playing music from its new 2023 release Playing With Fire, which celebrates the band’s 10th anniversary. Downbeat Magazine says “This band sounds like no other today in jazz,” and voted Maqueque one of the top ten groups in jazz in a recent critic’s poll.
Pianist Danae Olano is Jane’s closest collaborator. Her playing and compositions represent the heart and soul of Maqueque’s music. Mary Paz adds color on a variety of Latin percussion. Sympatico bassist Tailin Marrero completes the rhythm section. Though all musicians contribute vocals, Joanna Majoko, the incredibly soulful vocalist, originally from Zimbabwe, is the lead singer.
