Everything you need to know about HBCUs — and why you need to be at the 434 College Fair on March 7th
So… What Even Is an HBCU?
Let’s set the record straight. Historically Black Colleges and Universities — HBCUs — are 101 accredited institutions built before 1964, when most colleges had the audacity to turn away Black students entirely. Born out of that injustice, HBCUs didn’t just survive — they thrived. They became the most powerful pipeline for Black excellence in American history.
From Howard University in D.C. to Spelman College in Atlanta, HBCUs are where Black students go to be seen, heard, challenged, and celebrated — not tolerated. These institutions welcome students of all backgrounds, but make no mistake: they were built with Black students in mind, and that intentionality shows up in everything from the classroom to the yard.
Why HBCUs Are That Girl (and That Guy)
In a world where Black students are still fighting for equal footing in education, HBCUs don’t just level the playing field — they build a whole new one. These schools produce a disproportionate share of Black doctors, lawyers, engineers, and military officers. The community, the mentorship, the culture? Unmatched.
And it’s not just about academics. HBCU life is a vibe. Legendary homecomings. Iconic step shows. Marching bands that will have you on your feet. A sense of belonging that hits different when you walk onto a campus where your history is on the walls and your culture is in the curriculum. HBCU alumni don’t just graduate — they link up, level up, and pour back into their communities for life.
With affirmative action off the table and the college landscape shifting fast, HBCUs are more essential than ever. They offer academic rigor, serious financial aid, and an environment where you don’t have to shrink yourself to fit in. You walk in exactly as you are — and leave as exactly who you’re meant to be.
The Numbers Don’t Lie: HBCU Impact by the Stats
- There are 101 accredited HBCUs currently operating in the United States and U.S. territories.
- HBCUs enroll approximately 228,000 students annually, representing a diverse and growing population of learners.
- HBCUs produce approximately 25% of all Black STEM graduates and nearly 40% of Black engineers who earn graduate degrees — despite representing just 3% of all colleges and universities.
- More than 50% of Black American doctors and dentists, and 50% of Black lawyers, earned their undergraduate degrees at HBCUs.
- HBCUs generate over $16.5 billion in economic impact annually for their surrounding communities and states.
- HBCUs graduate Black students at rates comparable to or exceeding those of predominantly white institutions with similar student profiles.
- The average HBCU student is more likely to be a first-generation college student — making these institutions a critical gateway to higher education for families with no prior college experience.
- HBCU graduates report higher rates of civic engagement, entrepreneurship, and community leadership compared to Black graduates of other institutions.
- In recent years, HBCU applications have surged — some schools reporting increases of 50% or more — reflecting renewed national interest and pride in HBCU education.
- Federal investment in HBCUs has exceeded $5 billion in recent years, signaling growing recognition of their national importance.
“HBCUs are one of America’s best-kept secrets — and it’s time we stop keeping them secret. These schools produce the leaders, healers, innovators, and change-makers this country desperately needs.”
— Stacey Abrams, politician and voting rights activist, graduate of Spelman College
