A LIGHT IN THE DARK
One Night Only!
Friday, August 21 @ 8:45pm (Rain Date: Saturday, August 22 @ 8:45pm) Market Street Park: 101 E. Market Street
In response to the current national reckoning with racial inequality, police brutality, and Confederate monuments, a group of Charlottesville artists and anti-racist activists will present A LIGHT IN THE DARK on Friday, August 21 at 8:45 pm in Market Street Park. (Rain Date: Saturday, August 22.) Designed to be experienced one night only, this public art intervention features work created by local artists of color that centers Black lives and histories.
The project is part of an on-going effort to reclaim the public space as a site that celebrates Black artists and experiences, and inspires viewers to challenge existing mores and entrenched structural racism in our community. Organizers and artists hope the event will encourage the transformation of the Park now dominated by the Robert E. Lee statue from a place of white supremacy and Black exclusion into a place of reinvention and imagination.
MEDIA AVAILABILITY: Several artists will be available for interviews either before or after the event.
